48. Meeting an Old Friend

"You didn't tell us before our marriage that you have the drinking habit?" asked Ramya.

"Well, you can assume that I got into that only after our marriage" said Nataraj, nonchalantly.

Ramya realized that there was no point in talking to her husband. She decided to put up with his problem.

Over a period, Ramya found that life was turning out to be hell. Eentually, she came to the conclusion that she couldn't continue to live such a miserable life. She approached a woman lawyer, seeking her help to get divorce from Nataraj.

During the course of her visits to the lawyer Nalini for discussing her divorce petition, Ramya happened to meet Nalini's husband Viswanathan. During the brief interaction with him, Ramya came to know that Viswanathan was Nataraj's classmate in the school but that they lost touch subsequently.

Viswanathan met Nataraj pretending to have got his contact information from a friend. After some time, the two families had a get-together. Both Viswanathan and Nalini were careful to not give any indication of having known Ramya already.

Viswanathan showed interest in renewing their friendship and spent time with Nataraj. The two families became closer after meeting with each other a couple of times.

When Ramya was alone with Nalini, Nalini advised her to wait for sometime before finalizing her divorce petition. As per Nalini's advice, Ramya stopped talking to Nataraj about his drinking habit.

During the course of the next few months, Ramya noticed a lot of changes in Nataraj. For the first time, he talked about the need for him to come out of his drinking habit. Unlike he was earlier, he showed more empathy and understanding towards Ramya. He spoke to her praising Viswanathan's qualities and his family life.

It appeared to Ramya that she would have to rethink on getting a divorce from Nataraj.
