493. A Safe Place for Senthil

“You and Nallathambi joined this company at the same time. But he has overtaken you and climbed higher, hasn’t he?” Muthu asked his friend Senthil. The two friends were both working in the same company, but in different departments.

“If he had overtaken me in a fair way, by virtue of his performance or capability, I would have gracefully accepted his advancement. But many times, he schemed something, pushed me down, and climbed up. That is what makes me angry” said Senthil.

“If he schemed and pushed you down, doesn’t it mean you allowed it?”

“That’s true. He has the habit of pulling others down and using them as stepping stones to climb up. I can’t do that kind of a thing. That way, I am weaker than him. For the past three years, I was a little relieved that he had gone to our subsidiary company as the manager. But now, he has come back to our office. And I have to work under him! I am unable to accept this situation” said Senthil, feeling concerned.

“What are you going to do? Try for another job?”

“This is a good company. Why should I leave a good company just because of Nallathambi, especially when I have earned a good name here through my hard work and sincerity? I have another idea.”

“What is it?”

“There is a vacancy in our subsidiary company. I am thinking of going there.”

“As the manager, the position that Nallathambi had held till recently?”

“No. They have already made Raghu, who was the deputy manager there, the manager. Now, the deputy manager’s position is vacant. If I try, I can get it.”

“Will that be good for you?”

“I don’t know. For now, I don’t see any other way to keep myself at a safe distance from Nallathambi.”

“Think it over carefully!” said Kalimuthu.

“I have thought over it” said Senthil.

Six months later, during an audit in the subsidiary company, some irregularities committed by Nallathambi, when he was the manager there, came to light. Following this, Nallathambi was dismissed from his job.

The audit report also stated that Raghu, who was the deputy manager at that time and later promoted as the manager, had turned a blind eye to Nallathambi’s irregularities.

However, since Raghu had not knowingly participated in the wrongdoings and had merely been misled by Nallathambi, he was not punished but let off with a warning and demotion to the position of the deputy manager.

Senthil was commended for his role in helping he auditors uncover the irregularities and promoted as the manager.

“Congrats, Senthil! Your enemy is gone. Your move to take a position in the subsidiary to keep away from Nallathambi has accidentally worked out in your favor!” said Kalimuthu.

“Not by accident - by my own action!” said Senthil, smiling.

“Your action? How?”

“I knew Nallathambi was not a man of integrity. Being a manager in the subsidiary is like being a king of a tiny kingdom. I knew he would definitely have committed some irregularities there. I also knew that Raghu was a gullible person and that Nallathambi could easily manipulate him. To keep his wrongdoings from being exposed, Nallathambi had, when leaving the branch, spoken to the top management and ensured that Raghu became the manager.

“I went there to stay far from Nallathambi. What I didn’t expect was that there were many more irregularities than I had expected to find. I was the one who gave the auditors all the details and got Nallathambi exposed. I told the auditors and the top management about Raghu's innocence and took care to see that he didn't lose his job. After all these years of being hunted by an enemy, I am finally at peace,” said Senthil.

Knowing the Right Place

Meaning:
Even the weak will be able to win, if they, creating a strong defense, choose the right place to assail the foe.
